The present volume has been compiled by colleagues and friends as a tribute to Dr. A. Hilhorst, the Secretary of the Journal for the Study of Judaism , on the occasion of his 65th birthday. Its 23 contributions by renowned international experts, reflect the various interests of the honouree, his approach to the Classical and Semitic languages and literatures as forming part of a continuum, and his attention to the interactions between the different literary corpora. Several contributions deal with the interaction of the Old Testament with later Jewish, Gnostic, or Christian writings; others explore the influences of Greek writings within a Jewish context at the levels of philology, of theological ideas, of realia, or of influence of literary compositions. Furthermore, a number of contributions centers on the interaction of Greek motives in Jewish and Christian literature, whereas in several others the focus is on the Martyrium literature or on early Christian texts.

This book is the result of long scientific quest. Over thirty researchers, from different origins and backgrounds, have scrutinised and analysed testimonies by ancient people in order to define the nature, and explore the creations, of power in classical ancient times. Through two notions that appeared both essential and inseparable, that of foundations and that of crisis, historians and philologists endeavoured to present a consistent overall view of one of the major aspects of the workings of ancient societies.

How closely do the theoretical notions of "metaphor" and "allegory" developed by ancient rhetoricians reflect the practice of Classical writers? This question is tackled through eleven new papers by a team of distinguished academics. Ancient theories of metaphor are compared with twentieth-century alternatives; theory is tested against practice; and allegory--a distinctive though neglected feature of ancient literature and philosophy--is explored against the background of the rhetoricians' claim that it is one form of metaphor.

This volume examines the use of a central concept in the self-definition of any Greek speaking male: Andreia , the notion of courage and manliness. The nature and use of value terms quickly leads the researcher to core issues of cultural identity: through a combination of lexical or semantic and conceptual studies the discourse of manliness and its role in the construction of social order is studied, in a variety of authors, genres, and communicative situations. This book is of interest to students of the classical world, the history of values, gender studies, and cultural historians.

As distinct from the extant studies of ancient canonical texts, which focus either on literary (Greco-Roman) or religious (Judeo-Christian) canons, the present volume aims at bridging between these two fields by proposing the first comparative study of canon. An international team of experts discusses the processes of canon-formation in societies of the ancient world, addressing such issues as canon and the articulation of identity; the hermeneutical attitude toward canonical texts; textual fixity and openness; oral and written canons; methods of transmission, and more. Among the topics discussed are Mesopotamian canons; Zoroastrianism; the Bible; Homer; literary and philosophical canons in ancient Greece and Rome; the New Testament; the Roman law; Rabbinic Judaism and Kabbalistic literature. The future of the so-called Western Canon is one of the most hotly debated issues of the day. There is reason to believe that what is perceived today as a unique crisis, can be put into perspective by students of ancient societies, for the simple reason that the ancient world offers us the historical perspective of civilizations as a whole and allows us to study cultural phenomena in the longue durée .
